Hanging over the room is an almost tangible silence.
A photograph shows two people laughing.
One is still here, the other is on the other side.
Everything is suffused with memory.
In our increasingly frenetic world, we often forget that saying goodbye requires time.
But what if we prolong time?
What if we could hold on to those we have to let go of for just a little longer?
An extraordinary dialogue ensues beyond death between the one who remains and the one who goes.
A dialogue like a dance: playful and tender, full of laughter and melancholy.
A gentle, flowing waltz, a languorous tango, a slow ballet, a wild pogo, a nostalgic disco…
the mountain is a homage to the ritual of saying farewell. Farewell as reconciliation, as consolation, as the cherishing of the mystery of life and of death.
This production was inspired by the Japanese legend of a mountain in the Nara region, where people are taken by their loved ones to spend their final hours. Theatre-maker Michai Geyzen explores our relationship with death. Not to deny death or suppress thoughts of it, but to invite us to embrace it. With an open heart, without fear. With acceptance and serenity.
