Four men in a sterile room. A table, a couple of chairs, neon lighting. Nothing else. They have donned their uniforms; the game can begin. They compete with each other in discussions and part-singing, in stamina and speed. An absurd competition based on rules only they know. Is this a sports club? A training camp? A psychological test? A game without borders? A ritual ceremony of a secret society?
Über-Ich doesn’t give any cut-and-dried answers. What matters is the question: what if one of them breaks the codes? What if one of them wants out? Über-Ich is a parody of elitism, of group hierarchy and of the macho behaviour of young people when they are amongst themselves. Intriguing, wilful and hilarious.
Michai Geyzen studied for a Master’s in Directing at Maastricht Theatre Academy. Über-Ich was his diploma work, which he presented at De Warande, Turnhout in June 2014. The show was enthusiastically received at the 2014 Villanova festival and was invited to Theater aan Zee. This season Michai Geyzen is artist-in-residence at De Warande.
