The performance takes place on and around the farmyard. The rooster Cantecleir crows so impressively that the sun rises at the sound of his voice. The nocturnal animals hate him and hatch a plot to bring him down a peg or two. But when a strange bird comes along one day, the chickens really come off their perches.
Also joining the cast in song and play: a wild yet gentle pheasant, a hen, a blackbird, many proud roosters, a guinea fowl, a dog, another hen, an owl, a nightingale, a peacock and yet another hen.
The story is inspired by Chantecler by Edmond Rostand and, following Cyrano and Napolejong, forms the third part of the Rostand trilogy.
Première on 20 February 1998 at hetpaleis, Antwerp.
